The Effects Of Well Water On Hair

Minerals found in well water can be damaging to your hair.

Rain water gathers calcium, copper, iron, lead, magnesium and silica as it flows underground. These minerals can be found in your hair when the rain water is pumped above ground. They can build up in your hair and on your scalp, preventing hair growth and dulling your hair's appearance. Hair can become resistant to coloring, relaxing, highlighting and perming over time.

Calcium

Calcium can build up on your scalp creating a barrier for your hair. This barrier can cause your hair to break off. This build-up can be mistaken for dandruff. If you chemically treat your hair in any way, calcium can hinder the process, leaving hair looking dry and damaged.

Copper

Like calcium, copper can prevent the processing of relaxers, perms and dyes in your hair. Additionally, copper can also make blond hair appear green and add a darker tint to dark hair.

Iron

If your blond hair has more of an orange tint, then iron is the culprit. Darker hair will take on a darker tint. Iron can cause hair to become brittle and dry as well. Perms and color will not take to hair where iron is present.

Lead

Similar to the effects of iron and calcium, lead will cause hair to become dry over time. Lead prevents hair from fully processing colors, perms and relaxers.

Magnesium

Hair will lose its shine and volume as a result of magnesium build-up. This build-up also makes it difficult for relaxers, perms and color processes to take.

Silica

Silica, like calcium, causes a dandruff-like build-up on the scalp, which leads to stunted hair growth. Decreased volume and increased dryness of hair also result from silica's presence in well water.
