Insulate The Belly Of A Mobile Home

Mobile homes can be better insulated from underneath by adding a layer of batting.

The belly of the mobile home, or the underside, is usually anchored to the ground to stabilize it and then covered with a skirt to keep wind out. If you want to better insulate your home from cold weather, underneath the floor is one location that could use more protection. Installing rolled batting might improve your heating bill and keep the house warm.

Instructions

1. Pull the staples out that hold the plastic sheeting over the bottom of the mobile home. Use pliers to remove the staples and pull the sheeting out.

2. Drill screws to the edge of the bottom of the house along both sides of its length. Place them every 2 feet. Drill more screws into the beams that run across the bottom of the house perpendicular to the length. Space these the same as the width of the insulation so that the screws will be on either side of the batting strips.

3. Roll out insulation and place it under the home so that the length of the insulation is running in the same direction as the length of the house.

4. Lift the insulation up and staple where you can to the underside of the house. Beams are spaced out quite a bit, but you should be able to attach it somewhat, even though it will sag. Attach all the batting strips running the length of the house until the entire bottom of the house.

5. Twist wire around the screws on the front side of the home. Keep it taut as you pull it toward the back side of the house. At the back side, wrap it around the screws on the edge of the bottom of the house that you installed in step 2.

6. Wrap wire around each of the screws you installed along the beams under the house that run perpendicular to the length of the house. There should be a screw along these beams in between each strip of batting. This gives the insulation in these sections even more support.

7. Pull the sheeting back in place under the house. Have someone help you hold it up to the bottom of the house and staple it in place.
