Care For Louver Blinds

Louver blinds, whether vertical, horizontal, cheap plastic or pricey wood, are standard window treatments in many homes. People like them for the privacy they offer, but they're also notorious dust collectors and sometimes need tweaking to keep them in good working order.

Instructions

1. Use a paintbrush at least once a month to keep dust from piling up on your blinds. Close the blinds and give them a good dusting with a paint brush that you have sprayed with glass cleaner. The brush will collect the dust even if you don't press the blinds flat against the window.

2. Take the blinds down once a year. You'll need a screwdriver to do so. Fill the bathtub with 4 to 5 inches of warm water and mix in a bit of liquid dishwashing soap. Plunge the blinds into the tub and clean them with a rag or dishcloth. You can do this very quickly. Even if you have kept them dusted, the water will get quite dirty, so you will want to run new water for each set of blinds. Blot most of the moisture off the blinds, then rehang. The rest of the moisture will evaporate.

3. Give vertical blinds that are too long for the bathtub a good annual cleaning by laying them flat on a vinyl, ceramic tile or concrete floor--or even the driveway. The point is not to lay them out on carpet or hardwood. Remove most of the dust and loose dirt with a paintbrush or vacuum them with one of the hand-held tools that came with your vacuum. Spray the blinds with either glass cleaner or liquid bleach cleaner. Liquid bleach cleaner may be preferable for white blinds. Let the blinds sit for a few minutes and wipe down each slat. Turn the blinds over and do the same thing to the other side. Don't forget to clean the top that attaches to the wall. Remount the blinds. You won't need to worry about drying them.

4. Check for snarled cords. To keep your blinds in good working order, keep an eye on the chains or cords. When you notice snarls, take care of them immediately. The blinds will start to hang crookedly if you do not keep the cords straight.

Tips Warnings

Be careful not to let wood blinds soak in the water. Plunge them in, scrub them down, then blot them off without letting them soak. Don't forget to blot off the front and the back.
