Instructions For Making Pom Poms

Add pom poms to a variety of crafts including knit hats and scarves.

Pom poms, those little puffballs of yarn, are used in a variety of craft projects as either the star of the project or as small embellishment. Making your own pom poms allows you to have them available in just the size and color you need for your project. You can also play around with materials, making pom poms of ribbon or strips of paper to change up the look and texture of the craft. Make templates in a variety of sizes once you master the technique and you will never be without this crafting staple again.

Instructions

1. Draw a 3-inch diameter circle on two pieces of cardboard. Use a compass to make the circle, or trace around a drinking glass that is approximately the right diameter.

2. Draw a 1-inch diameter circle in the center of the two 3-inch circles. Use the compass for this second circle, or trace around a quarter.

3. Cut the circles out of the cardboard with a utility knife. Cut out the inner circles from the larger circles, then discard the inner circles.

4. Hold the two circles together so the middle holes are aligned. Cut a 6-foot length of yarn and pass it through the center of the circles, wrap it around the edge, then pass it back through the center. Continue wrapping the yarn through and around the cardboard template until you reach the end of the yarn.

5. Cut a second length of yarn, if necessary, to finish wrapping the entire template. Leave a 2-inch tail of yarn hanging on the outside of the template, and finish covering the template with the new length of yarn.

6. Cut the yarn loops apart along the outer edge of the template. Slide the scissor blade between the two layers of cardboard, if necessary, and cut through all the loops.

7. Cut a 1-foot length of yarn. Wrap it around the outside edge of the cardboard templates and pull it tight so it slips between the two layers of cardboard. Tie it in a knot to secure the yarn pom pom together.

8. Pull the cardboard templates off the pom pom. Fluff the yarn out so the pom pom is spherical, and trim any long yarn pieces so the pom pom has a uniform appearance.

Tips Warnings

Pom poms can be any size or thickness. Use less yarn to make thin pom poms or a large template to make cheerleader-sized pom poms.
