Adjust Faucet Handles

Faucet handles can be adjusted to maintain symmetry and aesthetics.

Adjusting faucet handles becomes necessary when the internal rubber sealing washers wear from use. The washers are compressed by the turning of the faucet handle, which in time causes the handle to be rotated further to fully shut the flow of water off. The forming of the washer under compression is normal, but when the handles lose symmetry in their appearance as a result, each one can be adjusted to their original position. You can adjust the faucet handles with a screwdriver and basic hand tool experience.

Instructions

1. Ensure that the faucet is turned off and that no dripping is present.

2. Remove the decorative cap from the top of the faucet handle. If necessary, pry the cap up using the tip of a flathead screwdriver.

3. Remove the handle retaining screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Turn the screw counterclockwise.

4. Lift the handle up and off from the faucet stem.

5. Reset the handle in the desired position.

6. Replace the handle retaining screw turning clockwise with a screwdriver.

7. Replace the decorative cap.

Tips Warnings

Round faucet knobs that have a C for cold water and H for hot water on their caps can have their symmetry restored by simply removing and resetting the cap in the proper position. It is not necessary to turn the water supply off for this procedure.

Some faucets vary from manufacturer to manufacturer in terms of design and method of handle removal. If the sink's faucet handle does not screw off, check the manufacturer's manual included with the unit or the manufacturer's website for handle removal instructions and additional tips.
