Casablanca ceiling fan - bypassing Intellitouch3 control or changing to Z-wave
We have a Casablanca Stealth ceiling fan I installed about 2 years ago. Instead of the typical wires switches for fan/light, it came w/ the Intelitouch control wall switch... essentially this has 2 power leads going up to the fan, and the switch uses a proprietary RF signal to a control circuit that is in the fan base to which turns the fan or light on/off and changes the levels accordingly. Well this week the fan randomly stopped responding to the buttons. Called Casablanca (well Hunter really), chatted w/ a tech, after some troubleshooting his diagnosis is the receiver board in the fan is bad. Now it turns out I'm getting ready to change several fixtures in my home over to Z-wave, and it has always bugged me that this fan is RF controlled but it uses this simple, locked-down system that I can't control in any additional way. My question is - is it possible I could either just bypass that circuit and control this thing with normal adjustable switches, like any normal fan, or better yet (assuming so) just change it right over to Z-wave control? I conveniently already ran 3-conductor wire to it planning ahead I have not pulled the fan and control circuit apart yet but I assume that the current control circuit just has 3 wires coming out (light, fan, ground) w/ analog power, and I'd run from my switch (or Z-wave relay) to these... The problem with the Casablanca fans is that they incorporate their capacitor switching in the remote control unit making it difficult to use a different remote module other than the one that the fan was designed to work with. Another member was asking the same question. See that thread. Installing Universal Ceiling Fan Remote Kit Inteli-Touch is a proprietary system with proprietary electronics within the fan. It also doesn't use RF, but instead sends a signal from the switch through the house wiring and into the fan. It is possible to convert an I-T fan to standard 3-speed so it can be controlled with other methods, but it requires ordering some parts and tearing into the fan quite a bit. I think Casablanca Fan Repair will have what you need.
