Pool refinishing is very expensive. Refinishing a pool professionally can be very expensive. However, for much less, it is possible to replaster a pool on your own. It takes a few professional tools and unusual items, but for the person who loves to do things themselves rather than pay someone else to do it, the difficultly of the project will be worth it. This project will take several weeks to complete but will take less time if multiple people work on it at once.
Instructions
1. Prepare the pool for re-plastering by draining out all the pool water into a sewer system or street gutter. Use a large hose attached to the drain valve in the pool. Pump the remaining water out of the pool with a pool pump. Allow it to dry for 24 hours before continuing.
2. Use a chisel to chip away the plaster around all edges, pumps, connectors and drains in the pool. Sweep up the dust, and throw it away. Wear a mask during this process to protect your lungs from dust inhalation.
3. Create an acid wash mixture in a large 5-gallon or larger bucket. Dilute the acid solution to 1/3 strength, and pour into the pool. Use a push broom to spread the acid around the pool and pool walls. Use a handheld brush to wash the sides of the pool. Make sure to wear gloves, eyewear and a mask during this step.
4. Rinse the acid out of the pool using the spray nozzle on a garden hose. Spray the acid and plaster mud into one spot, and pump out the remaining dirty water using a pool pump. Dispose of the acid water according to the directions on the label. Don't put acid down a regular drain. Allow the pool to dry.
5. Mix up some pool plaster 5 gallons at a time. Follow the instructions on the package, and mix up in the cement mixer. Place the plaster into the pool working in 3x3-foot sections at a time. Spread the plaster 3/8- to 1/2-inch thick. Work from the deep end of the pool toward the shallow end. Plaster the sides of the pool last of all.
6. Allow the plaster to dry for 24 hours. Note any uneven patches, and fill with plaster. Allow the patches to dry for another 24 hours. Fill the pool with water. Allow it to sit for 24 to 48 hours while the plaster cures.
7. Brush the sides and floor of the pool one time a day for about a week to eliminate all plaster dust. Use a pool vacuum to suck out any remaining plaster dust.
Tips Warnings
Always have a water solution ready to treat eyes and skin when working with acid.
Never breathe in the acid fumes.
