Make A Hemp Lanyard

Weave lanyards from hemp cord.

Hemp serves as a very strong, natural cord good for making bags, wall art and jewelry. Though hemp comes in many dyed colors, the most popular color is its natural beige. Those that make hemp jewelry often embellish it with wooden, shell and glass beads and enjoy the natural look of beige hemp.

Hemp macram#xE9; involves two basic stitches, both of which have the same base. The only difference between the two is the cord lengths. Both result in chic, earthy jewelry that may or may not be enhanced by beads.

Instructions

1. Snip 2 lengths of hemp about 6 times longer than you want your piece to be and 2 lengths about 4 inches longer than your finished piece. For instance, to make a necklace 10 inches long, snip two 60 inch pieces and two 14 inch pieces.

2. Slip the ends of your hemp lengths under the clip of a clipboard. Do not tie them together and make sure your shorter pieces are between your two longer pieces. This ensures that your piece remains flat. The cords are A through D from left to right.

3. Bring cord A over the center cords and under cord D. Bring cord D under the center cords and up through the loop created by cord A. Pull the cords tight. Repeat, beginning with cord D this time. Continue to the end of your piece.

4. Tie off both ends of your piece by gathering the ends together, bending them down across your piece to create a loop, pushing the ends through the loop and pulling to tighten.

5. Create a spiral necklace by cutting 2 lengths of hemp 12 times longer than you want your finished piece to be. Fold them so one half of your cords is about 4 inches longer than your finished piece and the other half is much longer. Pinch the fold to make a loop and tie it off as in step 4. Repeat steps 2 and 3; as you tie, the piece should begin to twist.

Tips Warnings

Add beads by counting your knots. For example, count 10 knots and add a bead, then 6 knots and add a beat, etc.

Slip the pieces of a toggle clasp onto the flat necklace before tying off the ends to create a necklace that is easy to wear.
