Troubleshoot A Kitchenaid Freezer Ice Maker

A Kitchenaid freezer ice maker is an important part of the freezer to have working, especially if your are someone who like to entertain guests and have get-togethers at your home. If something goes wrong with the ice maker, it can put a damper on the gathering. However, you do not automatically need to call the repairman. In fact, if you know troubleshoot a Kitchenaid freezer ice maker, you very well may find that you can fairly easily fix the problem yourself.

Instructions

1. Check the position of the lever that is just above the bucket into which ice cubes fall. When there is a lot of ice in the bucket, this lever gets pushed up. When it is in the up position, it essentially turns off the ice maker. Even after you have taken ice from the ice maker, the lever can sometimes get stuck. Simply push the lever down, and there is a good chance the freezer will begin making ice again soon.

2. Check the connection hose in the back of the fridge. Behind the freezer, there is a small hose that connects from the wall to the freezer. It almost looks like a cable. If this plug is pinched or not hooked up completely, the water is unable to flow into the refrigerator, thus the ice maker cannot make ice. Scoot the refrigerator from the wall, and check the connection to make sure it is tight and not blocked.

3. Feel the filling hose inside of the freezer. This hose is located just above the ice maker. Ideally, the water flows from this hose into the ice maker and then ice is made. However, one of the problems that sometimes occurs is that the water can get stuck inside this hose and freeze. If this occurs, the ice in the hose blocks any water from coming out.

When feeling the hose, bend it to see if it is flexible. If it is not, use a hot washcloth and wrap it around the hose. This will help melt the ice inside and allow the water to flow freely.

4. Check the freezer temperature dial. Although the temperature for water to freeze is 32 degrees F, an ice maker needs to have a colder temperature than that to quickly and efficiently make ice. The Kitchenaid ice maker should be set to somewhere around 10 degrees F. Change the temperature setting, and check back on the ice maker in a couple of hours to see if more ice has been made.

5. Remove all of the ice from the ice bucket to see what the inside of the bucket looks like if the ice tastes funny. After some time, the coating inside of the bucket can erode. When this occurs, it gets mixed in with the ice and makes the ice taste strange. This can be fixed by getting a new ice bucket for the freezer.

Tips Warnings

It is always a good idea to check the power cord as well as the breaker to make sure that the freezer is turned on and plugged in.

If you plan to remove panels to see inside the ice maker, remember to unplug the freezer first. Not doing so could cause serious injury or death.
