Lining a pinafore will hide the seams for a tailored finish while providing structure and versatility. You can use matching or contrasting material for the lining. Just mark the lining pieces with a fabric marker or chalk so you know which is which when you sew them together.
Instructions
1. Cut out the pinafore according to your pattern, cutting two sets of the bodice and skirt pieces. Mark the lining in some way, if you're using the same fabric for both.
2. Sew the shoulder seams and side seams of the bodice, lining, skirt and skirt lining. Leave the back seam of the bodice and bodice lining open. Press all of the seams open.
3. Join and sew the sleeves and collar to the bodice. With the right sides together, sew the bodice and the lining together along the neck edge. Pivot at the corner seam allowance and continue down the back seams. Turn the bodice right side out and press all the seams open.
4. Put the skirt and skirt lining together at the hem, with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Sew them together. Open the joined sections out, with right sides together. Join the backs of each side of the skirt and lining together and sew. Turn right side out and press. This provides a finished edge for the open back sections of the pinafore.
5. Bring the top edges of the skirt and skirt lining together and baste. Gather the waistline through both layers. Pin the skirt edges and bodice with right sides together, keeping the lining free. The skirt edges should go to the end of the bodice edge so the lining will enclose them when you're finished.
6. Turn up and press the seam allowance of the bodice lining. Hand stitch it to the waistline, enclosing the seam allowance and gathering stitches. Press the seam allowance under at the sleeve openings on the lining and hand stitch it in place.
7. Finish your pinafore by pressing and applying buttons or trim.
