Instructions

Teach a Cat Not to Bite

1. You need to teach your cat that handling is enjoyable and that petting feels good. To do this in a non-threatening way, practice handling your cat when he or she is relaxed. Find a way that your cat likes to be handled and test different places to pet them.

2. Begin by petting behind your cat's ears and rubbing their fur gently. Start with a small area of rubbing the fur and work your way into longer strokes. In time, you should be able to stroke your cat all the way down to his or her tail.

3. If your cat rolls over onto her tummy, it means that she is totally relaxed. When attempting to stroke her underside, offer a lot of praise and a friendly voice to keep her calm. Rolling on her back and exposing her stomach is a way to show she is submissive and it is up to you to keep this bond of trust going. You may want to offer her a treat for performing this action.

4. Cats do have sensitive areas that they do not like to be touched. For most cats this is the tail, ears, and paws. You will probably find this out as you perform these exercises.

5. To handle these areas, start with the cat's paws and ears. Gently hold a front paw in your hand, and scratch behind an ear. Give your cat a treat when performing this action. Then, let go and ignore your cat for awhile. Do this again in a few minutes. Practice this exercise a few times a day and within a few days your cat will look forward to having her paw held and ear scratched.

6. To be able to examine your cat's ears do the following: Scratch your cat behind her ear. While doing this, place your thumb in a position to fold back the ear in order to see inside. Use a treat and offer plenty of praise when your cat allows this action to take place.

7. Use the same technique above to examine you cat's mouth. Scratch behind the ear with one hand, and use the other to lift up the upper lip to see her teeth. Work slowly and gently and offer praise and a treat for good behavior.
