In the age of modern medicine, the use of herbs and other traditional medicine is sometimes viewed as quaint, old-fashioned or, sometimes, even nonsense. However, many of the herbs used in such traditional medicine still have pharmacological effects, often with at least some benefit to the user. Andrographis paniculata is one such herb. Typically referred to simply as andrographis, and a number of alternate names, andrographis has been used for years in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine for many afflictions and benefits.
Common Cold
The bitter constituents of andrographis are believed to stimulate the immune system and anti-inflammatory response, reducing symptoms of the common cold and related sore throat. This immune system stimulation also may prevent the onset of a cold in an otherwise healthy individual.
Infections
Andrographis has been shown to support the immune system against microbial infection.
Gastrointestinal Problems
Andrographis has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat many problems in the stomach and intestines, including diarrhea, indigestion, low stomach acidity and heartburn.
HIV Treatment
Preliminary trials have indicated that isolated andrographolides, which are found in andrographis, may reduce the viral load and increase CD4 lymphocyte levels in people with HIV. However, the trial also revealed serious potential liver problems for the participants.
Hepatitis Support
Preliminary research indicates that andrographis has shown some benefits to people suffering from chronic viral hepatitis.
Liver Toxicity
Preliminary studies indicate that andrographis may help protect the liver from toxic injury, perhaps even more effectively than milk thistle, a well-known liver-protective herb.
