Instructions For The Master Cleanse

Written in 1976, Steven Burrough's book "The Master Cleanser" detailed the controversial Master Cleanse diet, which recommended using a lemonade concoction called the Master Cleanse lemonade and various laxative liquids to cleanse the body of harmful toxins. Burroughs does not allow any substitutions to be used because he believes they reduce the effectiveness of the diet. Several celebrities have used the Master Cleanse to lose weight, including Robin Quivers and Beyonce Knowles.

Make the Lemonade

Make the Master Cleanse lemonade. Combine 2 tbsp. of lemon juice, 2 tbsp. of organic maple syrup, and cayenne pepper to taste in a 10-oz. glass jar. Empty 8 ounces of room-temperature water into the mixture. Place a lid on the glass gar and shake it.

Drink the Lemonade Every Day

Drink the Master Cleanse lemonade daily. According to Steven Burroughs, six to 12 glasses are required every day. Drink the lemonade during peaks of hunger. Do not consume any food while drinking the lemonade.

Drink Salt Water During the Morning

Drink a quart of salt water after waking up in the morning. According to CalorieLab.com, salt water causes liquid bowel movements, eliminating extra feces from the body. Make sure to have close access to a toilet--the bowel movements are very frequent.

Drink an Herbal Laxative Tea During the Evening

Drink a herbal laxative tea during the evening, right before bed. Like salt water, it clears out fecal matter from the body, resulting in several liquid bowel movements. Do not use laxative supplements in place of herbal laxative tea. No liquids are allowed to be switched out during the Master Cleanse.

Continue for 10 to 40 Days

Continue taking the Master Cleanse lemonade, salt water liquid, and herbal laxative tea as recommended for 10 to 40 days. Do not drink alcohol, coffee, tea, soda, or other liquids not listed on the Master Cleanse diet plan. Water and mint tea are allowed in moderate amounts.
