Choose A Weighted Blanket

A weighted blanket provides comfort and warmth.

Weighted blankets are specially constructed blankets made of cotton, flannel and fleece fabrics with a variety of colorful designs. Inside of the blankets are a number of pellets causing the blankets to weigh a certain number of pounds. Weighted blankets are not so much for warmth as they are for providing a soothing, relaxing or calming effect to help people suffering from insomnia, restless leg syndrome, chemotherapy pain, autism and other syndromes sleep through the night. The blankets are believed to work based off the principle that deep pressure touch simulation releases melatonin and calms people down.

Instructions

1. Decide what you want to use the blanket for. Whether your blanket will be for use as a calming tool in the car, at events or for sleeping at night will determine which size blanket you need as large blankets are recommended for night time sleeping.

2. Select the right size of weighted blanket fits your need. Select a lap blanket (size 34 inches by 43 inches) for car use or a wrap size blanket (43 inches by 52 inches) for wrapping around the recipient's shoulders and chest while sitting outside or at events, or even on the couch or in the recliner at home. Select a crib, toddler, twin, full, queen or king size blanket for night-time sleeping use depending on the size of bed in which the wearer sleeps.

3. Determine what weight of blanket best serves your need. Dream Catcher weighted blanket manufacturer reports that occupational therapists recommend using a formula of 10 percent body weight plus one pound to select an initial starting weight for one's first weighted blanket. For example, if purchasing a blanket for a 180-pound adult, choose a blanket weighing about 19 pounds. If the blanket is for yourself or a family member, use a scale to measure your weight and then select the appropriate weighted blanket.

4. Look for a weighted blanket with multiple inner layers of cotton fabric and polypropylene pellets sewed into those inner layers in an even pattern. Choose weighted blankets constructed in this manner to ensure long life and full potential health benefits.
