Fenugreek is a versatile herb that is most known for its seasoning in Indian cuisine. It's an easy-to-grow herb that can be ready to sprinkle in salads in just a few days, or it can be harvested for its seeds in about two months. Fenugreek isn't only useful in the kitchen, but is prized for its medicinal qualities; it is used to treat a number of maladies, including sore throats, stomach upsets, diabetes and high cholesterol.
Instructions
1. Purchase a packet of fenugreek seeds from a herbal supply store or garden center. Plan to plant fenugreek seeds outdoors in early to mid-spring, when the soil has warmed and danger of frost has passed.
2. Prepare a place in your herb garden. Remove all weeds with a hoe. Make shallow furrows about 4 inches apart.
3. Plant the seeds ¼-inch deep in the soil. When the seeds sprout, thin them for use in salads or sandwiches, or as garnish, leaving larger plants to harvest for seeds later.
4. Pick the seed pods when they turn yellow. Lay the pods in a sunny spot until they're completely dry. Then break them open and save the seeds. Store the fenugreek seeds in a sealed container and use them to season curries, soups, pickles or vegetable dishes.
