Patchouli Ingredients

Patchouli is a plant that is typically used in Indian and East Asian scents. The oil from this plant is put into inks and made into incense. It is a strong, woody scent that many people like, but others find harsh and too strong. There are several components that give patchouli its distinct characteristics.

Patchoulene

This ingredient comes in both alpha and beta forms and is what gives the plant its scent as well as the name. The scent has been known to help lessen anxiety and to calm people's nerves. However, if it is too overwhelming, these effects can be counteracted. Also, this ingredient is what gives inks and perfumes their patchouli scent as well. The scent is also an aphrodisiac. Patchoulene can also act as an anti-inflammatory if rubbed on an affected area.

Carophyllene

Patchouli has been used as an insecticide for centuries. The ingredient carophyllene is what is responsible for keeping the bugs away. Burning this oil outside during the summer will help ward off the bugs. It has also historically been used to help treat poisonous snake and bug bites.

Other Ingredients

The other ingredients in patchouli work together to bring about several effects. It can increase the frequency of urination if it is consumed. Also, patchouli alcohol is used as an antiseptic to clean wounds and help them heal. Patchouli helps constrict the blood vessels to slow or stop bleeding. Drinking a patchouli tonic or tea can improve digestion.
