4d Basics

The term "4D" refers to a real-time three-dimensional viewing that is typically used in medical imaging. The 4D technology provides information about organs and tissues as they move, such as the lung and heart.

Benefits

Imagery in 4D is continually updated. It is used in different imaging techniques such as ultrasound, CT scans and thermal scans. The technology allows physicians to assess organ function, monitor treatment and make necessary adjustments as it is being given, according to GE Healthcare.

Pregnancy

The technology of 4D also has application in the ultrasound monitoring of pregnancies to assess the status of the fetus as well as the mother. It can also be used in ultrasound-guided procedures such as needle biopsies if required.

Additional Information

The FDA has warned against the use of 3D and 4D ultrasound by unqualified users for entertainment or "keepsake" purposes. This refers to consumers paying for ultrasounds of a woman's fetus as mementos, rather than as a medical procedure. While ultrasound has an excellent safety record, the FDA recommends against unnecessary exposure to ultrasound instruments.
