Yeast Infection Symptoms In Babies

According to MedicineNet.com, "Many infants acquire Candida infections from their mothers during the process of birth. Yeast exists naturally in the mother's vagina. When the child is delivered through the birth canal, the baby comes in contact with the yeast." Since babies aren't able to verbalize the discomfort of a yeast infection, there are some symptoms parents should look for.

Types

Yeast infections in babies can be located in the mouth, commonly referred to as "thrush," and in the diaper region.

Mouth

A yeast infection in a baby's mouth is characterized by creamy white patches on the tongue and inside the cheeks. Sometimes, the patches are accompanied by pain.

Diaper Area

Yeast infections in the diaper area are characterized by red, raised lesions that can sometimes accompany a diaper rash. These symptoms are worsened by excessive moisture and lack of air circulation.

Considerations

It's not uncommon for parents to mistake yeast infections in babies with diaper rash. If you treat your baby for diaper rash and the symptoms don't improve after a couple of days, he or she may have a yeast infection.

Treatment

Treatment with an antifungal medication is usually recommended for yeast infections in the mouth and diaper area. These medicines can be obtained without a prescription. However, you should always talk to your child's pediatrician before administering any over-the-counter medications to your infant.
