Avoid Accidents While Driving

There are nearly 25 million reported vehicular accidents annually on U.S. roads and highways. About 50,000 drivers and passengers will die as a result of injuries. When we are driving a vehicle, we assume an enormous responsibility and must make every effort to avoid accidents while driving.

Instructions

1. Drive defensively. Anticipate other drivers' behaviors and assume the possibility that others may not be paying attention. Be prepared to react responsibly to avoid an accident.

2. Keep the radio volume at a reasonable level. Choose a volume setting that allows vehicle horns and emergency vehicles to easily be heard. Save the headphones for a passengers and non-driving activities.

3. Put the cell phone on "drive" or "speaker" mode so keep hands free while driving. Limit the calls that are accepted when driving. Pull off the road to return calls or participate in extended conversations.

4. Be constantly alert while driving. Check the rear and side view mirrors frequently. Look ahead in the road past the next vehicle. Anticipate upcoming intersections, highway access, speed limit changes, stoplights or stop signs and pedestrian crossings.

5. Focus on driving and let the discourtesies of others pass. Understand that some drivers may be inadvertently distracted and intend no personal affront. Cultivate a sense of compassion for others on the road.

6. Make sure the vehicle is in proper working order. Have routine check-ups to assure that brakes are working properly, that headlight and taillights are functioning and that tire pressure is correct and appropriate for driving conditions.

7. Extend courtesy to other drivers. Always yield. Allow motorists to merge, change lanes or enter traffic from an access point. Smile and acknowledge motorists when appropriate.
