Clomiphene, also know as Clomid, is a fertility pill used to increase a woman's ovulation; it may also be prescribed to increase a woman's fertility when the man has fertility issues. When taken properly, clomiphene increases the chance that a woman will conceive twins by approximately 10 percent.
Instructions
1. Begin using the basal body thermometer. These thermometers can be purchased at a pharmacy, and the accompanying instructions are easy to follow. The basal body thermometer is one of the first tests run as part of an infertility workup. It indicates a woman's ovulation, among other things. Having several months of temperature charted will help when you see the doctor.
2. Make an appointment with a doctor. It can be a family doctor, general practitioner or OB/GYN. These doctors can begin the infertility workup, but will probably not prescribe the clomiphene. More than likely, they will refer you to a fertility specialist. Most fertility specialist require a referral as do many insurance companies.
3. Determine whether clomiphene will help. The fertility specialist will run several tests before prescribing the fertility pill. It is prescribed for women who have irregular ovulation or no ovulation at all. Sometimes it is used to help prepare a woman for an assisted reproductive technology such as in vitro fertilization by encouraging the woman's body to produce several eggs before the procedure. It is also used for women who might have hormonal issues and to increase a woman's fertility if the man has a low sperm count or sperm with poor motility.
4. Take clomiphene according to the doctor's instructions. Generally you will take the pill for 5 days beginning several days into your cycle. It helps the woman's body to produce more follicle-stimulating hormones (known as FSH) which in turns helps the ovaries to produce one or more mature eggs. Generally, clomiphene is taken for 3 to 6 months; taking it longer does not increase your chances of conceiving.
