Herbal Remedy For Constipation

Constipation is a common condition characterized by the inability to have a bowel movement or the inability to pass stools without a great deal of effort. The definition of a normal bowel movement varies, depending on the individual. However, if a person does not have at least three bowel movements per week they are generally considered to be constipated. People who are constipated also tend to have stools that are hard and dry.


Symptoms and Causes


Common symptoms of constipation include fewer than three bowel movements a week, hard stools, straining to pass stool, a sensation that something is blocking the rectum, or a feeling that you are not done going to the bathroom despite having completed a bowel movement.


According to the Mayo Clinic, the main causes of constipation include: not drinking enough fluids, not eating enough fiber, ignoring the sensation of having to go to the bathroom, lack of exercise, irritable bowel syndrome, lifestyle changes, sickness, certain diseases (i.e. Parkinson's, stroke, etc.), colon or rectum issues, certain over-the-counter and prescribed medications, changes in hormones, anal fissures or hemorrhoids, loss of salt in the body and spinal cord injuries.


Herbal remedies are available to alleviate symptoms of constipation and help the body achieve normal bowels movements. These herbal remedies have not been conclusively demonstrated to be effective by any medical profession, but anecdotal evidence suggests success with several different herbs.


Aloe








HealthGuidance.org states that aloe may be effective in combating constipation because it contains vital nutrients, amino acids and vitamins. Over the years, aloe has become well known for its medicinal attributes in the treatment of many conditions. For constipation, it is recommended that you either drink 2 to 4 ounces of aloe vera juice daily or take the herb in capsule form.


Dandelion Root


Dandelion root is another possible herbal treatment for those with constipation, states healthguidance.org. This herb has been claimed to be beneficial for digestion, which means stools can pass more smoothly and with less straining. The properties of this medicinal herb may also help those suffering from constipation, even if the problem is not related to diet. Dandelion root is normally administered in a tea that is consumed three to four times daily.


Alfalfa


Alfalfa is high in fiber and Vitamin K and can relieve constipation, particularly when lack of fiber is an issue. Fiber and Vitamin K also allows the body to support more beneficial bacteria that aids in digestion. Therefore, alfalfa will not only help with constipation, but may also alleviate an upset stomach.
