Choose the color and width of your wire according to your personal style.
The white, green and blue hues make kyanite quite enticing. This type of crystal has a flattened blade design, and as you move it around in the light, the colors seem to change. Due to the structure and varying hardness of this crystal, it proves too hard for drilling. Instead, one must choose to set the kyanite with other means, to be able to wear it as jewelry. Wire wrapping and end capping are two choices that are often employed for setting crystals.
Instructions
Wire Wrap Setting
1. Use wire cutters to cut a 2 to 3 foot length of silver or gold wire. Due to the various hues that you can find kyanite in, you can choose the color and thickness of the wire according to your personal taste and budget.
2. Hold one end of your wire with pliers. Make a loop at the end of the wire and proceed to wind the wire around the base of that loop a few times, to reinforce it. The finished loop should resemble a hangman's noose.
3. Hold your kyanite in one hand and position the loop that you made in the previous step at one end of the stone. Wrap the free part of the wire around the crystal.
4. Finish by wrapping the free part of your wire around the top loop that you made in Step 2. A few loops around should be sufficient. Cut any excess wire off with the wire cutters.
5. String a chain through the top loop.
End Cap Setting
6. Place a small amount of jewelry glue on the inner part of your jewelry end cap.
7. Hold your kyanite piece in your hand. Carefully position the end cap over one end of your kyanite and push the cap down, until it is snug against the top of the stone.
8. Use your pliers to gently squeeze the sides of the end cap to fit against the sides of your kyanite. Place the kyanite on its side, on a piece of newspaper, and allow it to dry.
9. Loop a jumper through the top hole of the end cap. This will allow you to connect it to a chain.
