Replacing All Teeth With Implants

Thanks to modern dentistry, people who lose their teeth can have attractive replacements in the form of dental implants. As their name suggests, implants have roots which are inserted into the gums, thereby replicating natural teeth. You don't remove implants, and you simply care for them as you do the rest of your teeth. Most often, implants are used to replace teeth that were lost due to disease or accidents. If necessary, you can have all your teeth replaced with implants.

Instructions

1. Consider your current dental situation. If you have several missing teeth or serious tooth or gum disease, it may be wise to replace all your teeth with implants. If you simply don't like the appearance of your teeth, veneers are better options for correcting the issue.

2. Know that implants are only used in serious situations. It is always preferable to maintain your natural teeth, if possible. Explore alternate treatment methods before deciding that implants are appropriate for your entire mouth.

3. Choose a dentist who is an expert at implants. Most dentists have specialties, and you want one skilled at the art of performing implant surgery. Oral surgeons are usually the best choice for this.

4. Visit more than one dentist before making a choice on who will perform the procedure. You can then compare the experience, price and demeanor of a few dentists before making a final decision.

5. Ask prospective oral surgeons about pre- and post-operative care. The dentist you ultimately choose should be receptive to your questions, answering each one fully.

6. Be aware that the process of replacing all your teeth with implants will take several months. The doctor will drill small holes in your jaw where titanium screws will be placed. You'll then need to wait a few months while your jaw grows around the screws. Once it has, the implanted teeth will be placed over the screws.

7. Quit smoking before you begin the process of getting implants. Dental implants are less likely to be successful in those who smoke.

8. Care for your teeth and gums properly. Proper dental hygiene is imperative to successful implants.
