Tasigna Side Effects

Tasigna, generically known as nilotinib, is a drug used to treat a specific strain of blood cancer. As is the case with prescription drugs, Tasigna may cause a number of side effects varying in severity based upon dose size and the individual.

Identification

Tasigna is a prescription drug that interferes with the growth of some cancer cells. It is specifically used to treat a type of blood cancer called Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Often, Tasigna is prescribed to those individuals suffering from leukemia who are unable to take other similar medications.

Common Side Effects

According to Drugs.com, common, less serious side effects that may occur as the result of taking Tasigna include itching and mild rash, constipation or diarrhea, headache, insomnia, joint and muscle pain, tiredness and nausea. Although these side effects are common and less serious, do not hesitate to seek medical attention if one or several of these side effects persist. Persistent common side effects may be a sign of a more serious problem.

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects that may occur when using Tasigna include dizziness, pounding or irregular heartbeat, convulsions, swelling of the hands or feet, severe rash, severe allergic reaction including swelling of the face and/or throat, dry mouth, warmth or redness of the skin, and severe stomach pain. Although these side effects are less common, if any arise, seek immediate medical attention. Do not hesitate if any of these serious side effects arise.

Using Tasigna

Tasigna should be taken exactly as prescribed to you by your doctor. Make sure to follow closely the dosage and duration of the medication. According to Drugs.com, Tasigna should be taken on an empty stomach (one hour before or two hours after a meal). The pill should be swallowed whole with a large glass of water. Do not chew or break the pill in order to avoid inappropriate release of the medication. Tasigna is often taken every 12 hours.

Warning

Never take a double dose of Tasigna to make up for a missed dose. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice as they may increase the severity of any side effects. Seek immediate medical attention in the event of an overdose. An overdose is often accompanied by severe muscle cramps.
