Common Warts & Removal

Warts are unsightly skin growths that make many people uncomfortable. Depending on where they are at, they can be painful as well. Some warts do cause cancer, and consulting with a physician is always important and recommended. There are ways to remove warts; however they may recur. Different types of warts vary in appearance.

Flat

Flat warts typically appear on hands, chest, arms and legs. Flat warts are just that, flat, and may actually look more like a freckle since they are round and brown in color. Many times people do not realize they are there because they look so much like a freckle and they have not come to surface yet. Flat warts can be removed with over the counter treatment such as Dr. Scholl's Clear Away or DuoFilm Salicylic Acid Wart Remover. If you do choose to consult a doctor, they can be removed through cryosurgery.

Genital

Genital warts are found in clusters on the vagina, penis and anus. Genital warts are spread through sexual intercourse. Whether they are visible or not, you can still be infected with genital warts, so avoid sex with a person who has them and always use protection. There are some over-the-counter treatments such as Wart DX, Guaranteed Wart and Genital Wart Removal by Derma Remedies by Yavonae Skin Care. However, with genital warts you should always consult a professional, because of the sensitivity of the area in which they occur.

Mouth

Mouth warts are very painful and extremely rare. The only way you can get mouth warts is through oral sex with a person with genital warts. There are no cures for mouth warts currently. However, there are treatments that are effective, but these treatments are extremely painful and difficult. Speak with a professional about which course of treatment is best for you.

Plantar

Plantar warts occur on the bottoms of feet. They are flat and grow into the foot. Typically they are skin colored and can be very painful, especially when there is a large cluster of them on any part of the foot. Plantar warts can be treated with Pedifix Wart Stick Solid-stick Wart Remover by Pedifix or Compound W Freeze Off Wart Removal System by Compound W. Freezing them off is a bit more difficult to do, since they are not raised to the surface.

Periungual

Periungal warts are found around the nails and cuticles, as well as under the nails. These look like common warts in that are round, cauliflower shaped and clustered together. Periungals can be removed through freezing, scraping, and using such topical treatments such as WartFree Small Topical Liquid by Verdia.

Filiform

Filiform warts appear on the face and neck; they are long, almost like a thread. They also can occur on the lips and eyes. They are usually skin colored. You can treat these with over-the-counter products, such as Salicylic Acid 30% Chemical Peel by Perfect Peel Solutions or TCA 10% Chemical Peel by Perfect Peel Solutions. However, because of the sensitivity of the area, a doctor should still be consulted about the treatment.
