Mine Chalcopyrite

Chalcopyrite is one of the main forms that copper ore is found in. Its chemical name is CuFeS2. It can be found in veins of sulfides or it can be found distributed throughout various types of igneous rocks. To mine this valued mineral, you will generally need heavy equipment, a trained eye and access to the right types of geological outcroppings.








Instructions








1. Find a promising dig site. You will want to look for tale-tell signs of chalcopyrite such as the presence of sulfides, igneous rock formations, and surface ore deposites of chalcopyrite.


2. Survey the dig site for chalcopyrite veins. You will want to look for rocks with a brassy yellow or a tarnished green color. When you find these colors, hammer off a sample and compare it to your mineral sample of chalcopyrite. If you have a match then you may have found a good site to dig. Go back and see how long the surface vein is. Hammer off as much as you can and collect your samples. This surface mining is a good option for amateur miners or recreational miners.


3. Bring in the heavy equipment and explosives if you are ready for commercial mining of chalcopyrite. To free the mineral from the surrounding rock you will need to drill holes around the vein, drop in explosives and pop the bedrock. Then you will use heavy equipment to move the rubble from the blast site to the refinery. Here the ore will be crushed and smelted. During the smelting process the copper ore will be heated to 1357.77 degrees Kelvin, or 1084.62 degrees C or 1984.32 degrees F. It will then be poured off into molds.
