Make Your Own Seasoned Salt Blend

Make your own seasoned salt with your favorite spices.

A seasoned salt blend can impart flavor to meats, potatoes and other vegetables. You can purchase blended salt seasonings or you can make your own custom version with a few select ingredients. If you read the labels on prepared seasoned salt blends, you may be surprised to find ingredients like monosodium glutamate (msg), silicon dioxide and partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Skip the preservatives, binders and fillers, and let this homemade seasoned salt blend deliver on its promise of simplicity and flavor.

Instructions

1. Purchase all ingredients in bulk at a natural foods center. The price per pound is typically far better than buying in a store by the bottle or can. For the healthiest blend, choose organic spices.

2. Add 1/3 cup salt, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder and 1 teaspoon paprika to a small glass mixing bowl. Stir until blended.

3. Pour the seasoned salt blend into a glass spice jar and add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of whole grain rice to absorb moisture and keep the salt from caking and clumping.

4. Use the seasoned salt blend liberally to enhance recipes like grilled or broiled poultry or steak, mashed red potatoes with skins, cubed potatoes with onion and Asiago cheese, or even french fries.
