Babies are born with very little instinctual knowledge, but they have an incredible ability to learn. Infants have to learn nearly everything from hold their head up to understand language. They learn all these things by playing simple games, communicating with adults and exploring the world around them and their own bodies. There is no special trick to increasing an infant's brain development; the more you interact with him, the more opportunities he will have to learn.
Instructions
1. Talk to your baby constantly. If you are taking her out for a walk, you can point at objects saying something like "look at the doggie." You can also tell your baby what you are doing when you feed, change or bathe her. The more you talk to your baby, the more opportunity she will have to develop her language skills.
2. Read baby books to your infant. Books designed for babies have anywhere from a few words to a sentence on each page and a picture they go along with. Read the page to your infant. Point at the picture. Show it to him. Give him time to observe.
3. Play simple, repetitive games with your infant. Peek-a-boo will teach her that you are there even if she can't see you. Shaking a rattle gently and moving it around her head will let her learn connect sounds and objects. See the link in our Resources section for some other baby games.
4. Join a play group. Let your baby meet other children and play with them at least a couple times a week. Infants grow socially and form friendships by playing with other children their own age.
5. Expose your infant to different sounds, shapes and textures. Let him touch soft different fabrics, board books and other baby-safe objects and toys to see what they feel like. Play him music and sing songs to him. Encourage him to sing along.
6. Teach your infant basic baby sign language. Teach her some simple signs like "yes," "no," "hungry," and "tired." This will let her interact with the world and develop language skills.
