Burdenko Water & Sports Therapy

Burdenko water and sports therapy, also known as the Burdenko Method, is a system for training, conditioning and rehabilitation developed by Igor Burdenko, an expert in aquatic rehabilitation. Burdenko founded the Burdenko Water and Sports Therapy Institute is in Newton, MA in 1984.

Theories

The Burdenko Method focuses on therapy performed in water and on land. Burdenko theorized that because water is a large component of the human body and was a vital factor in the evolution of life on Earth, being immersed in water may trigger unknown mechanisms that can cause cellular and tissue changes. Water also provides the mechanical benefit of changing the gravity force on the human body, which sometimes allows greater freedom of movement and support, especially for patients who have become de-conditioned or injured.

Methodology

The Burdenko Method aims to help develop or restore a patient's balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, speed and strength. Together, these qualities represent what Burdenko called "fitness intelligence." Exercises offer a variety of starting positions and modalities to achieve the greatest possible range of motion. A Burdenko practitioner adapts exercises so they meet him at his current level of ability, gradually increasing that level. Massage therapy, diet and nutrition, acupuncture and other modalities may also be used, depending on the client's needs.

Application

Daily activities recommended for maintenance by the Burdenko Institute consist of 60 minutes of exercise to develop fitness intelligence, a 30- to 45-minute workout in the water, a 3- to 5-mile walk and movements to perfect posture. Practitioners are encouraged to eat three regular meals, sleep eight hours per night, meditate and have frequent bowel movements. Non-traditional recommendations are moving the stomach and shaking the body at different speeds several times a day. The Institute encourages a weekly monitoring of weight and blood pressure.

Credentials

Burdenko was educated in Russia and holds an master's degree in physical education and a doctorate degree in sports medicine. He is considered a leading practitioner in the field of aquatic therapy; the Aquatic Therapy Rehabilitation Institute awarded him the Professional of the Year award in 1995, and he received the title of clinical associate of physical therapy from Boston University in 1999. He has published books on rehabilitation topics.
