Hawthorne Side Effects

Hawthorn is an herbal remedy for coronary diseases, high blood pressure, low blood pressure and circulation conditions. It has antioxidant properties and lowers blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. The flowers, leaves and fruits of the hawthorn are used in herbal preparations.


Safety


According the University of Maryland Medical Center, The American Herbal Products Association rates hawthorn as a very safe herb to use.


Side Effects


Rare side effects include headache, nausea, digestive upset, dizziness, sleepiness and heart palpitations.


Other Side Effects


Some people experience an increase in pain, angina attacks and exhaustion while walking or exercising.


Drug Interactions


Hawthorn triggers side effects and interactions with other herbs, supplements and medications. Blood pressure and heart-disorder medications are extremely susceptible to reactions with hawthorn.


Warning


Take hawthorn only under the direction of a health care provider. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not self-treat heart conditions.
