Osteopathy Dangers

Osteopathy has been claimed to help with depression.

Osteopathy is rooted in the belief that all diseases and disorders originate in, or are related to, problems in the musculoskeletal system. This system consists of the nerves, the bones and muscles that form the body's structure and are all interconnected. The original belief of the founder of osteopathy is that all physical problems originate in the spine. This means that osteopathy focuses on the bones and the muscles-unintentional injury to these can sometimes occur. There are some other dangers associated with osteopathy.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy, or osteopathic medicine, is an alternative form of medicine started in 1874 in Missouri. While it is an alternative medicine, it has been an officially certified form of medicine in the United States for a long time. The American Osteopathic Association was formed in 1901 to regularize the practice of osteopathy. Practitioners of osteopathy were officially recognized in all 50 states in 1962.

Application

This belief manifests itself in a focus on the musculoskeletal system. A visit to an osteopathic practitioner will involve an interview and a physical check, in which the spine and posture are examined. Your back, legs or arms may be manipulated with the hands to examine their strength and muscle tone. Osteopathy also makes use of X-rays to diagnose disorders and illnesses and uses prescription medications in treatment. Osteopathic treatment may also involve the moving of a tight muscle towards and away from a painful area and held until the tightness eases. This can sometimes lead to unintended pain.

Certification

All practitioners of osteopathy should be properly certified. A doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) receives the same basic training as a medical doctor (M.D.), as well training in manipulate the muscles and the bones. He must also receive a license to practice like other medical professionals. When visiting a D.O. check to ensure that the appropriate certification is on display.

Associated Risks

Most dangers involved in osteopathy are unwanted side effects and should only last for a few days. You may experience fatigue after treatment. You may also experience muscle pain and possibly a slight headache. More seriously, a technique used by some D.O.s, called spinal manipulation has been linked to more serious side effects, such as artery damage and strokes. The risk of these side effects is more likely when spine manipulation is performed on the upper back.

Considerations

Discuss any risks associated with osteopathic treatment with a D.O. and always ensure that a D.O. is fully certified and licensed before undergoing any treatments. Be wary of any persons claiming to practice osteopathy that are unwilling to provide their official certification.
