Medicinal Properties Of Lotus Tea

Lotus flower tea has many medicinal uses.

The lotus plant features thin, soft pink petals arranged in a cup-like formation around a dark pink center. As the plant matures, the center grows into a flat seed pot with round protrusions. When the plant dries, the protrusions open and release large, brown seeds.

Like many other Chinese plants, the lotus plant contains medicinal properties. Tea steeped from its different parts can cure different ailments.

Leaves

Tea made from lotus leaves is a curative for colds, headache, diarrhea, cough and nose bleeds. This tea may remove toxins from the blood and support a healthy immune system. For teas with these properties, pick leaves from a fully mature plant.

Young lotus leaves give the body a large percentage of vital nutrients. Pluck green leaves from the shoots before the buds open.

Seeds

Tea steeped from whole lotus seeds benefits the spleen and may help stop diarrhea associated with chi, or energy, deficiency. The seed also contains calming properties helpful for soothing restlessness, palpitations and insomnia. This tea is also said to strengthen the joints, tendons and nervous system. It's also a purported cancer preventative.

Petals and Roots

Though the petals are mostly used for cooking and perfumes, tea brewed from them can help strengthen the heart and lower blood sugar levels, according to "Bangkok Post." The petals may be fresh or dried.

Tea made from lotus root enhances strength and relieves excessive thirst. As a wash, it can help heal wounds and reduce inflammation.
