Reduce Prolonged Periods

Prolonged periods refer to menstrual cycles that last longer than seven days. Heavy bleeding can accompany long menstrual cycles, and dealing with prolonged periods can trigger other problems such as exhaustion and abdominal pain. Several conditions can play a role in prolonged periods. Treatment options are available, however, to reduce the length of menstrual cycles.

Instructions

1. Consult a gynecologist and experiment with birth control pills. The hormones included in these medications can help reduce the length and severity of menstrual bleeding.

2. Correct hormonal imbalances with other drugs. Menopausal women dealing with an estrogren and progesterone imbalance (which can trigger prolonged periods) can consult their physician about medications to correct this imbalance and reduce periods.

3. Take steps to control stress and anxiety. Both factors may worsen bleeding and prolong a menstrual cycle. Reduce daily obligations, improve time management, participate in relaxing hobbies, get plenty of sleep and know your limitations.

4. Discuss surgical options with a doctor. If unable to reduce heavy or prolonged periods with natural methods or medications, and if prolonged periods begin to disrupt your life, talk to a doctor to see if you're a candidate for surgical options such as a hysterectomy (surgical removal of uterus) to help stop abnormal bleeding.
