Why Safety Is Important In Park Maintenance

Parks are terrific places to relax and enjoy yourself. However, regardless of whether parks are run on the local, state, or national level, they need to be maintained. Safety in park maintenance is important for reasons of health, finances, service provision, enjoyment and injury prevention.

Diseases and Ailments

Park maintenance often requires the use of chemical agents such as insecticides or paints. These substances can be toxic if not handled properly. They also may aggravate certain conditions such as asthma or dry skin. Wearing safety gloves, masks and goggles during chemical applications and informing park users when chemicals have been freshly applied can reduce the risk of health problems.

Money

When parks are maintained in an unsafe way, there is much greater risk of costly legal suits. For example, if someone slips on an icy stairway in a park because park officials did not salt the stairway, the person who slipped may sue the park management to cover the cost of any medical bills. Additionally, keeping structures well maintained reduces the need for frequent replacement, which reduces park costs.

Service Continuity

When parks are kept safe, members of the park management and those who visit do not have to deal with park the park being closed until problems are remedied. The park is thus able to provide continuous, uninterrupted service to visitors.

Enjoyment and Customer Service

When parks are safely maintained, then visitors are able to take full advantage of the park features and services. Thismakes visits to the park more enjoyable. Furthermore, if employees don't have to worry about problems leads to a work shift that has less anxiety and stress, which in turn may lead to better customer service.

Injuries

Keeping a park properly maintained reduces the number of injuries that can occur on the premises. For example, if tools for employees are kept in good working order, then employees are less likely to experience injuries such as electrical shock. Similarly, if broken glass is cleaned up from a visitor pathway, visitors stand less chance of getting hurt. The fewer injuries there are, the less money the park has to pay out in legal settlements and the longer the park can remain open so that more visitors can enjoy it.
