AARP is not an insurance company, but utilizes the power of its membership numbers to negotiate rates and policies for its members. AARP found a major medical policy that it calls Essential, because it offers the minimal amount of coverage everyone should carry to protect against major financial losses in the event of an extended hospital stay.
Age Limits
Essential plans are available to members between the ages of 50 and 64.
Rates
Rates vary by location. Choose from plans that provide high-deductible, low-premium, PPO or preventive care options.
Underwriters
The Essential Premier plan recommended by AARP is sold and underwritten by Aetna Insurance Company. AARP membership is no guarantee of acceptance. Aetna created the plan exclusively for AARP members.
Preventive coverage
The Essential Premier policy covers preventive care including flu shots, routine annual exams and colonoscopies.
Extras
Included with the insurance plan are extras such as access to a secure medical history website, home delivery services for prescriptions and weight management programs.
Options
A Basic Essential and Plus Essential plan that was sold by United Healthcare to AARP members, which offered the lowest prices and minimum coverages, has been discontinued.
