Do A Facial For Vata Ayurveda Mindbody Type

Vatas are the thinnest of the three Ayurveda mind-body types. Ayurveda dates back 5,000 years to India and is a science that offers nutritional guidelines and ways to treat illness and disease. Vatas generally are of slim, slight build, and dryness and movement are prevailing themes. Dry skin, dry hair, constipation as well as great talkativeness and being in constant motion is common for many Vatas. Doing a facial at home with a specially prepared oil will help calm a Vata’s restless energy.

Instructions

1. Cleanse the skin with a mild soap like castile or glycerin that is made without artificial fragrances which can irritate the skin. Dryness is normal for Vatas, so steaming the skin may be appropriate.

2. Pour boiling water in a medium-sized bowl, adding lavender and tea tree oil or lemon essential oils. Drape a towel over your head as you hover over the steaming bowl, keeping your mouth and eyes closed. Steam for 10 to 12 minutes. Splash off with cold water to close your pores, then pat your skin dry.

3. Prepare the facial oil by combining one cup of coconut or olive oil with a smaller amount of avocado oil. Add 4 to 5 drops of any of the following essential oils: rose geranium, clove, marjoram, lavender or peppermint. Stir to blend the oils. Store in a clearly labeled, dark-colored glass bottle in the refrigerator.

4. Pour 1 to 2 tablespoons of this oily mixture over the face and neck, taking care to not let it get into the eyes, nose or ears. Drape a towel around the neck and chest to catch any oil that may drip.

5. Rest for 20 to 25 minutes to allow the oils to do their work. They will balance overactive sebaceous glands that can kick oil production into high gear, and also moisturize dry patches on the cheeks and upper lip areas.

6. Using a hot towel, drape it over your face for the last 5 minutes, being careful to not block airway passages of the nose. Rinse off the oily face mask, using soap if needed to clean off any heavy residue.

7. Mix 1 tablespoon of almond or sesame and coconut oil into the palm of your hand. Using sweeping motions, lightly rub it over your face and neck as a moisturizer. Allow your skin to dry completely. Apply sunscreen if you are going to be in the sun.
