Be A Successful Acupuncturist

Acupuncture is a growing medical practice in the United States. Patients use acupuncture to treat everything from infertility and headaches to cancer and autoimmune diseases. With the growing number of acupuncture practices available, an acupuncturist needs to be extremely skillful to excel. The following steps can help you build your practice.

Instructions

1. Attend a qualified school. Your schooling is the first step in your successful career in acupuncture. Individual schools have their own programs and employ slightly different philosophies. It is important to research each school you are interested in attending to ensure that the philosophy and program fit you.

It is also important to attend a school that is certified by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Check the website for a listing of accredited and candidate schools.

2. Practice. Acupuncture is a skill, and like any other skill, it takes practice. With each new patient you will gain a greater insight into the art of acupuncture and use it to treat your patients' pathologies. Do whatever you can to experience as many different types of patients and pathologies as possible in the beginning of your career, even if this means offering your services at lower cost than you will eventually require.

3. Read the experts. Many books are available. These writers can provide you with new insights and acupuncture styles to try with your patients.

4. Take advantage of continuing-education opportunities. These opportunities will help you expand your skill base and philosophical understanding of acupuncture. They are required to maintain your license, so take the opportunity to learn something from them.

5. Find a mentor, someone whose skills you admire. Ask if you can spend one day a week in the clinic with this person, watching him evaluate and treat patients.

6. Decide what your goals are. Do you want to specialize in a certain technique or style of acupuncture? Do you want to be an expert in a certain condition or pathology? Decide what your career goals are and formulate your education, experience and journey around them.
