Ear candles are a very popular homeopathic remedy for ear wax buildup and ear pain as noted by several homeopathic physicians referenced in the resources section at the bottom of this article. Made from common items like muslin strips and beeswax, the candles are very effective at safely drawing out earwax that is deep down in the ear canal. Beeswax ear candles are also very effective in relieving sinus pressure and have soothing properties from the oils that are included in their design. Beeswax ear candles are very easy to make and can even provide a great part-time income.
Instructions
1. Shave a tapered point on the end of your dowel with a knife. Start about 1 inch back and shave toward the end of the dowel until you have a point at the end. Use your paintbrush to place a layer of lacquer over the dowel until it is completely covered, them set it aside to dry.
2. Lay a sheet of plastic over your work table to keep the wax drippings from ruining the surface. Cut the muslin cloth with scissors into strips of about 1/2 inch wide and approximately 18 inches long.
3. Melt the beeswax in a pan on low heat until it is simmering. Do not allow the wax to come to a boil. Add the tea tree oil to the beeswax and stir the wax a few times to mix the oil into the wax.
4. Hold the wood dowel over the sauce pan for a few seconds and turn the dowel to warm it up over the entire surface. Using the dowel, lower a strip of the muslin into the beeswax and soak the muslin to make sure it is completely saturated with wax.
5. Lift the strip of muslin out of the wax with the dowel and hold it over your plastic sheeting to allow the muslin to cool for a moment. When it is cool enough to handle, but still warm, wrap the end of the muslin around the point of the dowel and then tightly wrap the dowel with the muslin, overlapping the cloth about 1/4 inch as you wrap it around the dowel.
6. Squeeze out any excess wax as you wrap the muslin around the dowel. Once you have completely wrapped the dowel, stick the tip of the dowel with the cloth in the pan of wax to seal the tip.
7. Hold the tip of the candle with one hand and the end of the dowel with the other. Slowly twist the dowel and gently pull it out of the candle so that the candle maintains its shape.
8. Trim the open end of the candle with the scissors so that the end is even and the candle is about 12 inches long. Cut the tip of the candle about 1/8 of an inch from the point so that there is a small hole at the end. Blow into the large end of the candle so that it forms a uniform conical shape. Lay the candle aside and allow it to finish cooling.
