Which Foods Are High In Purine

Purines are found in almost all foods, but some types of food have much higher levels than others. Some individuals need to watch their intake of purines because of elevated levels of uric acid, which can lead to gout and other health problems.

Organ Meats

Organ meats such as liver, heart, kidney and sweetbreads contain high levels of purine, whether they come from beef, pork or poultry.

Seafood and Fish

Anchovies, sardines, salmon, herring, mackerel, clams and squid contain high levels of purine, whether they are fresh or canned.

Beans

Beans also contain purine. Green and black-eyed peas, lentils, kidney, lima, and navy beans have the highest levels.

Meat

Beef, pork, bacon and lamb have the highest levels of purine in the meat category, although all protein foods contain somewhat high levels of purine. Meat broth, stock and gravy can have high levels of purine as well.

Vegetables

The vegetables with the highest purine levels include asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms and spinach.

Drinks

Alcoholic drinks made with yeast such as beer, lager and ale are high in purine.
