JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) is the organization that maintains standards of quality in medical facilities in the United States. MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is a document that contains information about hazardous chemicals and work safely with the chemical product.
JCAHO
JCAHO conducts periodic on-site surveys of health care organizations that need accreditation to obtain Medicare and Medicaid funding and that want to attract insurance contracts and other third-party payors. JCAHO sets standards for ambulatory care, behavioral health, critical access hospitals, disease-specific care, health care staffing services, home care, hospitals, long-term care and office-based surgery practices.
MSDS
MSDS documents contain information about a hazardous substance's product name, the chemical and generic name of the ingredients, the chemical and physical properties of the substance, health hazard information, the precautions for safe use and handling and the manufacturer's contact information.
JCAHO and MSDS
In order to become JCAHO accredited, organizations must maintain current, written inventory of hazardous materials. Staff must also have access to the information, be able to interpret the data and complete safety training in order to acquire and maintain JCAHO accreditation. The information can be maintained electronically if there is a hard copy in case the electronic system becomes unavailable.
