Light therapy is a technique that uses indirect exposure to bright light to treat mental conditions such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances according to the Mayo Clinic. PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder, has components that may be treated using light therapy, such as insomnia, sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression.
Light Therapy
Light therapy uses a light box that is prescribed or recommended by a health professional. The physician provides a treatment plan that includes the intensity level needed, the duration of exposure and the schedule for treatment. The light box may be used while the patient is doing other activities, such as working or reading. Light therapy does not call for taking medication, but may be used in conjunction with anti-depressants or other medications prescribed by a doctor. Light therapy may also be used in conjunction with other therapies, such as cognitive, group, or family therapies.
Light Therapy for PTSD
Patients with PTSD have been exposed to a traumatic event that results in symptoms that may include flashbacks, insomnia and emotional problems including depression and anxiety. Light therapy may be used for patients that would like to treat insomnia, depression or anxiety. Light therapy may allow a patient to have treatment without the use of drugs, or it can be used in conjunction with drugs. To alleviate insomnia and sleep disturbances, light therapy is often used early in the morning to reset biological rhythms to promote better sleeping habits. Depression and anxiety may also be improved using light therapy.
If using light therapy has not improved symptoms, other therapies or medications may be used. Cognitive therapy may be the most beneficial in treating PTSD, according to the US Department of Veterns Affairs.
Cautions and Side Effects
Patients with severe depression may experience suicidal thoughts after light therapy, according to the Mayo Clinic. Physical side effects may include headaches, nausea, vomiting, eye strain and fatigue.
