The decision to get a body piercing requires the piercee to consider consequences that may occur from having the procedure done. A lip piercing is an oral piercing that can damage braces if the piercing is not performed by a professional body piercer, who will use appropriate jewelry and provide the piercee with proper aftercare instructions to prevent damage to your braces.
Instructions
1. Inform the piercer that you have braces and request Bioplast jewelry. Bioplast jewelry is a type of plastic body piercing jewelry that can be put in an autoclave and sterilized before piercing. This type of jewelry is less likely to break or damage braces than stainless steel, titanium or niobium.
2. Downsize the jewelry two weeks after the initial piercing. When the lip is originally pierced, the jewelry will have to be long to allow for swelling. Once the initial swelling has subsided, the jewelry needs to be changed to a shorter post so it will not rub against or get caught on your braces.
3. Follow the aftercare instructions from the piercer. Do not bite, chew or suck on the jewelry. These actions can cause the jewelry to bounce back onto or rub the braces, resulting in damage or scratches.
