Mucus production is a natural occurrence in the body. The nose produces mucus, which moistens and cleans membranes and purifies abnormalities. Normally, mucus is swallowed unconsciously. However, if too much mucus is produced, or if the mucus secretions become too thick or too thin, you may begin to feel the mucus build up in the back of your throat. This is called post-nasal drip.
Treat the Underlying Condition for Thin Secretions
Post-nasal drip can be cured by treating the underlying condition. The appropriate treatment method depends on what the underlying condition is. Thin secretions are usually caused by a cold, flu, allergies, bacterial infection, and in some cases hormonal changes or temperature changes. Allergies are treated by avoiding exposure to the allergen or by taking allergy medications. Cold and flu are treated using over-the-counter antihistamines. Hormonal imbalances are treated using birth-control pills.
Treat the Underlying Condition for Thick Secretions
Thick secretions are caused by allergies and colds, but also by sinus infections, and increased dryness in the air during the winter from artificial heat sources. Thick secretions should be treated by avoiding the cause when possible and/or antibiotic therapy to cure the bacterial infection. Certain medications that contain guaifenes (such as Robitussin) can help thin mucus secretions. Nasal irrigation can also assist in treating post-nasal drip caused by thick secretions.
Treat the Symptoms of Post-Nasal Drip
When the cause can't be identified or cured, the best course of action is to treat the symptoms caused by the post-nasal drip. Avoiding caffeine and other diuretics such as alcohol can help to avoid post-nasal drip. Drinking more water and taking over-the-counter medications such as Robitussin may be helpful. A nasal spray may also be used.
