Opiate addiction can be a serious problem. While methadone is one treatment for opiate addiction, there is still the possibility of experiencing detox from methadone use. When taken as directed, this risk is minimal, but since many methadone users obtain it outside of a clinic, methadone addiction is a very real possibility. In these cases, cessation of methadone use may lead to methadone withdrawal symptoms.
What is methadone?
Methadone is a synthetic opiate. This means that it works on the brain in a way similar to opium. Methadone is more slowly absorbed and metabolized by the body compared to other opiates, which causes it to have a milder effect, but one that lasts longer.
What is methadone used for?
Methadone is most commonly used to alleviate symptoms of heroin withdrawal from addicts looking to quit. Because methadone works on the brain in a way similar to heroin, it can be used to reduce withdrawal symptoms. In addition, it can help prevent relapse by preventing the "high" created from heroin use. It can also be used for pain relief and to prevent coughing.
Methadone detox
When used for an extended period of time or in high doses, methadone can be addictive, just like any opiate. Methadone is used for detox for other opiates because of its lower addictive potential, but a methadone user can become addicted to it just the same. Methadone detox is generally milder, however, than that of other opiates.
Cold turkey
One method of methadone detox is to simply stop taking it. This will lead to some side effects, such as slowed breathing, constipation, nausea and sweating. Other symptoms may include insomnia, mild hallucinations and constriction of the pupils. These symptoms will usually go away in a few days.
Detox with other medications
In some cases, doctors may prescribe other medications to help with the symptoms. These include sedatives and benzodiazepines. While these medications will not prevent withdrawal, they will ease the symptoms and make it easier to rest and withstand them.
