Disorders Of The Skeletal System

The skeletal system provides the frame for the body and supports all other parts of the body. The skeletal system includes the skeleton and teeth and is made up of 206 bones. Disorders of the skeletal system effect the bones and teeth. Most skeletal disorders can be controlled and treated with medication or surgery.


Bursitis


Bursitis is the inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that lubricate the joints of the body. Bursitis is primarily caused by overactivity of arm and leg joints.


Arthritis


There are more than 100 types of disorders referred to as arthritis. Arthritis causes pain, inflammation and swelling in the joints of the body.








Spina Bifida


Spina bifida is a birth defect of the spine in which the spinal cord does not form properly. As a result, the spinal bone and skin do not form leaving a hole in the lower back at birth.


Scoliosis


Scoliosis is a sideways curvature occurring in the spinal column in adolescence. The reason that this disorder occurs more often in girls rather than boys is unknown.


Carpal Tunnel Syndrome


Carpel tunnel syndrome is a disorder that effects the median nerve in the wrist resulting in pain. It is caused by pressure and irritation of this nerve due to repetitive motion or injury.


Osteoporosis


Osteoporosis is a thinning and weakening of the bones. Bones of the body lose calcium which results in the loss of bone tissue and can lead to fracture and collapse.
