Alcoholism Detox
If the cause of cirrhosis is becaused of excessive alcohol use, cessation from alcohol is the key to healing. The liver constantly replaces cells from alcohol consumption. Cirrhosis can progress to liver cancer, so alcoholics are advised to stop drinking.
Interferon
Interferon is used to treat hepatitis to control cirrhosis. Interferon medication include ribavirin, which is used to help clear the hepatitis virus from the bloodstream. The treatments for hepatitis clear the virus and help eliminate further damage to the liver.
Low Sodium Diet
Cirrhosis affects proper liver function, so treatments are used to control side effects. Edema (swelling) and excess fluid build up is common during liver failure. Low sodium inhibits the body's ability to absorb water, which reduces intracellular fluid.
Blood Pressure
Blood pressure medication is needed to decrease hypertension. Hypertension increases chances for heart disease, kidney failure and excessive bleeding.
Liver Transplant
Liver transplant is the final treatment when medication and diet don't help relieve the damage to the liver. Liver transplants require a suitable donor and extensive surgery and recovery are needed.
