Likhit Japa Meditation is a unique type of yoga that exercises the mind more than the body. Likhit Japa translates roughly into “written word,” and “repetition” is the practice of writing a mantra over and over until your mind slips into a new form of consciousness. This meditation requires a great deal of focus but will be repaid by spiritual enlightenment. Here are some steps to help in Likhit Japa meditation.
Instructions
1. Choose an appropriate mantra to write. This should be one that has a special meaning to you or may prove helpful for a situation you are dealing with in life currently. If you do not have mantras memorized, find a book containing them and select one you think will be appropriate.
2. Wash your hands thoroughly. The pen and paper are considered sacred in Likhit Japa meditation, and it is a sign of respect to wash before touching them. In addition, this is symbolic of washing away the dirt and worries of the world as you prepare for meditation.
3. Pick a special pen and paper to use for Likhit Japa meditation. If these items are considered sacred, it's important to pick something more than a notepad and Sharpie. Pick items that are unique and representative of who you are. Store these in a safe place and bring them out when you are ready to begin meditating.
4. Focus on your paper and your mantra and begin writing the mantra, either from memory or copying from your book. Repeat this mantra once it ends by writing in an unbroken stream. This repetition will help your mind focus and attain the spirituality you desire.
5. Keep meditating for half an hour to help your mind reach as far into the mantra as possible. Set a gentle alarm, so you do not have to focus on clocks and time while meditating.
