Sleeping Positions While Pregnant

Sleeping during pregnancy

When you're pregnant, it's difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position, especially during the third trimester. If you have always slept on your back or your stomach, it may be challenging to follow your doctor's recommendation to sleep on your side instead. There are still things you can do to sleep comfortably and safely for both you and your baby during pregnancy.

Instructions

1. Sleep on your left side. This position brings more nutrients and blood to your placenta and your baby. It also reduces the risk of heartburn and swelling in your ankles and legs. You may need two pillows when sleeping on either side. Bend your knees and put one pillow between your legs and another pillow under your abdomen.

2. Sleep on your back occasionally. Although it might be comfortable, try to limit sleeping on your back because it may cause back pain due to your extra weight putting pressure on the back. Sleeping on your back also reduces blood circulation to your baby and to your heart , which may decrease your blood pressure and make you dizzy.

3. Avoid sleeping on your stomach. This is a uncomfortable position that also might cause damages to your baby.

4. Switch positions whenever you feel uncomfortable. You do not need to stay in one position all night and, in fact, it alleviates pressure in any one area if you move.

5. Get as much sleep as you can. Avoid caffeinated drinks before going to sleep, and try to establish a routine of going to bed and waking up at the same times every day.
