Presurgical Diet For Lap Band

The decision to have a lap band surgery is a step toward changing your eating habits and getting back to good health. The surgery will minimize the size of your stomach so that you are satisfied with less food. Two weeks before your surgery, you need to begin making these changes to your diet with the pre-op diet for a lap band surgery.

Increased Protein

The diet that you should consume before your lap band surgery should contain more protein than a typical well-balanced diet. The extra protein will help your body recover after the lap band surgery. A typical amount of protein in a lap band pre-surgery diet is between 70 and 120 grams per day.

Ask your doctor about supplementation with protein to ensure that you get the requisite amount before the surgery. Protein supplement powders may be prescribed to increase your protein and decrease the size of the liver. The surgery may need to be postponed if tests indicate the liver is too large.

Foods to Avoid

Highly-processed foods made with white flour and refined sugar are eliminated on this diet. Stay away from fried foods and those containing high levels of saturated fat. Red meat is fine on the diet, but you should limit the amount to avoid the fat. Choose lean sources of protein such as fish and skinless chicken.

Choose complex carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables instead of breads and pastas. Your meal plan will be restricted during the two weeks before the surgery, but it is a healthy way to kick off your new lifestyle.

Low Fat

The doctor will recommend a low-fat diet before your surgery as well. Choose low-fat options in milk and yogurt. Avoid butter and saturated fat and choose healthier sources of fat. The diet should be low in fat, but you do require some fat in your meal plan for good health. Good healthy sources of fat include nuts, olive oil, oily fish and canola oil.

The doctor will recommend a restrictive low-fat diet before your surgery to ensure that your liver is less fatty and that some of the fat is lost around the stomach. A healthy diet before your lap band procedure will also help you to recover quicker after the surgery. You might want to binge on some of your favorite temptations before the surgery, but the sooner you get started on your new diet, the sooner you will begin to lose weight.
