The number of women opting to go to the doctor for injections and surgeries to create fuller lips is on the rise. However, on the opposite side of the spectrum, there are women who wish to reduce the fullness of their lips. While the option of lip reduction surgery is out there, it is not necessary. There are a few makeup tips and techniques that can significantly reduce the prominence of your lips without the cost or pain of surgery.
Colors
Some people think that applying a nude or flesh-toned shade of lipstick will make the lips "disappear" or blend away. The fact is that lighter lipsticks, particularly neutral tones, make lips appear fuller. Stay away from light shades if you're trying to give the illusion of a smaller lip. Stick with matte lipsticks and avoid anything glossy, which will also accentuate the fullness of your lips.
Tools
In your makeup arsenal you'll need a good foundation, a matching concealer and loose powder. You could purchase a lip primer as well that will help keep the lip color in place. Pick a darker-toned lip liner and lipstick shade. Darker colors make lips appear smaller and will reduce the fullness of the lip, particularly if the lip shade is matte. If you're having trouble picking out a color, stick with berry tones because they are flattering on most complexions.
Makeup Techniques
Begin by using a sponge to apply foundation to your entire face, including the outer rim of the lips. Follow up with a concealer brush and concealer to outline your lips. Blend the concealer to the center of your lip, starting from the outside and working your way in. Apply a loose dusting of powder all over the face and lips. At this point, you may apply lip primer to your lips if you choose, but this is not a necessary step. To apply color, begin by taking your sharpened lip liner and carefully line your lips inside your natural lip line. This may be tricky at first because you'll want to follow your natural shape, but with practice this will become much easier. Line below the bow of your upper lip, avoiding the sides of your mouth, and then go directly to the bottom lip, making sure to follow the curves of your lips while staying within your natural lip line. You may want to use a lip brush to fill in the lipstick shade, so you have the most control and don't accidentally go outside the lines you created. Fill in your lips with the dark shade of lip color of your choice. Use one ply of tissue and spread over lips. Now gently dust with loose powder over the tissue and onto the lips. Follow by reapplying another coat of lipstick. Finally, blot lips on tissue once more, and you'll notice a significant reduction in the size of your lips.
